Born in South Korea, Joel was adopted at a young age and moved to the southwest suburbs of Chicago. Both homeschooled and evangelical, Joel has read the bible literally dozens of times, and has no idea where the state of Oregon is on a map.
He has appeared on TBS’s Conan!. Other television appearances include Comedy Central’s @MIDNIGHT and THE MELTDOWN WITH JONAH AND KUMAIL, Bravo’s THEN AND NOW, Logo’s COMEDY CABARET, and TruTV’s COMEDY KNOCKOUT.
His COMEDY CENTRAL PRESENTS stand-up special premiered in the fall of 2017 and is available to stream here.
For television, his writing credits include BILLY ON THE STREET and the Comedy Central pilot, PROBLEMATIC W/ MOSHE KASHER, Netflix’s BIG MOUTH and Comedy Central’s upcoming THE OTHER TWO, created and executive produced by Chris Kelley and Sarah Schneider.
As a comedian he has performed at numerous comedy clubs, bar basements and festivals all across the country and abroad. He has been featured at SXSW, Bonnaroo, Bumbershoot, Outside Lands, The Bridgetown Comedy Festival, SF Sketchfest, The New York Comedy Festival, and the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal where he performed as one of the New Faces of Comedy in 2016.
His debut stand up comedy album with Comedy Central records titled “MODEL MINORITY.” It’s available everywhere you buy/stream music.
Variety dubbed him a Comic to Watch for 2018. Previously Vulture named Joel one their Comedians You Should (and Will) Know for 2017, noting that “Booster is a strong, incisive joke writer, but he’s at his best interacting with a crowd, striking a nice balance between inviting and button-pushing.” Esquire Magazine named him one of their 10 Best Stand-Up Comedians To Watch in 2017, praising his “notably political” tweets, whatever that means. He also had the honor of being named one of Forbes 30 Under 30 in the Hollywood and Entertainment division. He is very young!
Wildly, Joel is a playwright as well. His world premiere collaboration with The New Colony, Kate and Sam Are Not Breaking Up, opened in fall of 2013 in Chicago to critical acclaim and garnered a non-equity Jeff Award nomination for Best New Work. The play has been had both East and West Coast premieres, a Canadian production, and is currently available to purchase via Chicago Dramaworks.
