Some people go their entire lives without ever finding their true purpose. They wander around without aims or goals, wondering what life might have in store for them. Other people, however, feel a calling. Sometimes it’s a potent pang in the pit of their stomachs. Sometimes it’s a proverbial lightbulb going off inside their skull. Kyle Yamada got his inspiration from above.
And when the Big Guy comes calling, you darn well better answer.
Kyle was born in California and raised in Rapid City, South Dakota. His dad was Japanese, and his mom was a Southern California blonde. After college he moved to Los Angeles, California, and there he started performing comedy. Although he fell into stand up by accident, he quickly became a regular throughout the Southern California region. He even went on tour, performing all over the South and Midwest.
But something was missing. Comedy gave him a creative outlet, but he still felt an emptiness inside himself. He stepped away from comedy, reconnected with a childhood friend, and soon she became his wife. They moved back to Rapid City, rededicated their lives to Christ, became teachers and eventually elementary school principals. They were blessed with two beautiful children. Life was everything they could have ever wanted, and more.
But God had other plans.
In 2015, Kyle got the urge to start writing jokes again. It was different than before; this time, it was a compulsion. God wanted him to return to comedy; he knew that deep in his heart. But God wanted him to do it as a ministry, to bring people closer to Jesus through the power of laughter. Kyle was initially resistant, but the calling was not to be denied. He started doing shows at churches and Christian events. He was a hit. He had truly found his calling. God led the way.
Kyle’s goal is a lofty one: to bring light into a world that is too often surrounded by darkness. He feels it is important to provide entertainment that is not only funny but also clean and non-offensive. He doesn’t need foul language and graphic material to make people laugh. His show is high energy, filled with facial expressions, sound effects and music. He sprinkles in various voices and mimicry to bring his characterizations to life. He doesn’t just tell jokes; he acts them out. He’s the whole package.
He combines observational humor with biographical stories to create a unique and satisfying comedy experience. He talks about musicians, magicians and marriage. He discusses stereotypes, ethnic differences, college, love languages and even hibachi grills. He tells his jokes with a warm and inviting smile, and never with a mean spirit. His show is all about positivity and bringing the audience together.
In 2019, Kyle Yamada relocated to Minneapolis, where he now performs comedy full time. He can be found performing in clubs, churches, corporate events, fundraisers as well as private shows. Wherever there is a stage, Kyle is ready and willing to perform.
